Blue Relay user and group privileges are managed through roles (for more information, see What Are Roles?). Permissions provide you with an extra layer of access control for specific folders, files, forms, and comparison results.
Permissions are set using allow and deny rules. A rule either allows or denies a user or group the ability to perform specific actions on an item. For example, you could create a rule to allow a user to modify a file they wouldn’t normally have access to, or you could create a rule to prevent a group from viewing a specific folder.
In the rule, you determine the actions that the user or group can or cannot perform by selecting a role. For example, let’s say your organization has an Editor role that is able to modify files. If you want to allow a user to modify a specific file, you would allow them to have the Editor role for the file. If you want to prevent a user from modifying a specific file, you would deny them the Editor role for the file.
Note that allow and deny rules don’t modify a user’s or group’s overall role. These rule simply define the actions that a user or group can or cannot perform for a specific item.
Sample Rules
Let’s look at a few examples. In these examples we’ll use an Editor role (which is able to modify files) to control the actions the user or group can perform. Your organization may use different roles.
Let’s say you want to prevent a user from modifying a file. To accomplish this, you would create a deny rule for the file that states the user is denied the actions contained in the Editor role.
Let’s say you want to allow a group to modify a form. If the form appears in the Files area, you can assign permissions to the form. Select the form, click , then click Permissions, just as you would for a file or folder.
You can now create a rule that allows the group to have Editor privileges for the form.
Let’s say you want to prevent a group from accessing a comparison results file. Select the comparison results file, click , then click Permissions, just as you would for a file or folder. You can now create a rule that denies the group all access to the comparison results file.
